I’m the largest real-estate developer in New York and the highest-paid person on TV. Could I retire to a dream-holiday destination? Retirement doesn’t appeal to me. The big message for them - and it’s something I have always said - is that you have to love what you are doing. It doesn’t take long for them to be impressed. If they are one of the lucky ones, they might get to have dinner with me and Melania at our apartment. There are 18 candidates and they live in a luxurious suite in one of my buildings, Trump Tower. The people who don’t like me are people who are jealous of the show, which is now in its second season. People say: “Oh, it’s not No 1,” or “You aren’t the biggest developer in New York,” or “You don’t have the best golf course” - but I do. I am a superstar on the No 1 show in television. I am surprised by the success of The Apprentice. Work here is brutal - it’s business, but the sky’s the limit: that’s what I tell the people in the boardroom of my show, The Apprentice. The whole country - the whole world - respects the comeback New York has made. I was back in New York, in the office, by 9am on Monday. I once took a transatlantic business trip during which I had breakfast in London with Mohamed al-Fayed, then dinner in Slovenia with Melania’s parents. When I travel for work I like to do so at the weekend to avoid losing office time. We toured half a dozen potential sites, including several near Red Square, and we stayed in Lenin’s suite at the National Hotel. In the late 1980s and early 1990s I flew to Moscow to pursue a joint venture to construct and manage a hotel there. I also remember my first trip to Paris, when we visited Versailles, which was stupendous. Melania used to spend her holidays in famously beautiful places, such as the French and Italian rivieras, and Lake Como. I formed the Mar-a-Lago Club in 1995 and I love to host parties there, with guests such as Julio Iglesias, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Paris Hilton’s mum and dad Rick and Kathy, and Sean “P Diddy” Combs. I got the property back to its original grandeur - from the ornate interior, with 16th-century Venetian tapestries and gold-leaf mouldings, to the signature exterior, with its 75ft tower.

Finally, in 1985, I put in a cash bid of $5 million, plus another $3 million for furnishings. Almost immediately I put in a bid of $15 million, which was promptly rejected.

I thought it was unbelievably beautiful, and deserved to be preserved and restored to its full glory. I first saw it while vacationing in Palm Beach in 1982. It’s a palatial estate and a hallmark of Palm Beach society, formerly owned by Marjorie Merriweather Post, the cereal heiress. Mar-a-Lago means “ocean to lake” - it’s on 20 acres that face the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Worth. Right now we are getting ready to get married - we are planning on January or February next year. The perfect holiday to me is golfing, working, reading, relaxing, being with Melania, friends and family. Melania and I have a lot of friends there and we enjoy seeing them. Being in Florida means that I am less likely to be wearing a suit every day, and I will have more time to catch up on reading and improving my golf game.

When I am not rushing from construction site to meetings, or filming my TV show, The Apprentice, I love to relax at Mar-a-Lago, my private country club in Palm Beach, Florida.
I have four golf courses, which means I no longer feel guilty about playing golf because now I can do it for work. I love to golf, but I prefer to golf on my own courses, so that I can check them out as I go along. My holidays will always include work because that keeps me happy and well balanced.
